The Nürburgring Nordschleife, simply known as The Ring by enthusiasts, is a motorsport circuit in Nurburg, Germany. It was built between 1925 and 1927 around the village and medieval castle of Nürburg in the Eifel, which is about 70 kilometres (43 miles) south of Cologne and 120 kilometres (75 miles) northwest of Frankfurt.
The circuit was called The Green Hell by Jackie Stewart, who won the 1968 German F1 GP here by over 4 minutes! The circuit is widely considered the toughest, most dangerous and most demanding purpose-built race track in the world. Nowadays a shorter autodrome section of the track is used for F1 and other motorsport events, while the famous Nordschleife is open to the public most of the year. See the Review section for further information.

Green Hell
Posted by: Sam Collins
The Nurburgring (named the ‘Green Hell’ by Jackie Stewart) in Germany is the longest race circuit in the world. Nobody truly knows how many corners the circuit has - some reports say 73 but enthusiasts claim over 100 - and it measures 20.8km in length. In the past, Formula One racers took on this mighty course in full but today they are limited to the shorter Grand Prix course (just over 5kms in length) built inside the old Southern loop. It is still a challenge and has witnessed some thrilling races in recent years, notably in 2007 when unknown German driver Markus Winkelhock headed the Grand Prix in a Spyker whilst the likes of Lewis Hamilton spun out. All the grandstands on the course offer good viewing though the ones on the Southern hairpin are particularly notable.
Every year around two million visitors turn up at Nurburgring to experience this awe-inspiring circuit and revel in its colourful heritage. The circuit organises around 100 motor racing events a year, attracting visitors from all over the world to the region.
The local area lacks a major town but the small towns and villages have plenty of great places for food and drink, especially Mullenbach. There are a number of small cafes and pubs alongside the roads surrounding the circuit offering local produce in generous portions. Inside the track itself there is plenty to do, not least the superb and vast Nurburgring museum and the new science centre. The kart track in the basement of the building is simple but a lot of fun. For those willing to travel away from the track, the winemaking Mosel valley is only a half hour away and well worth a visit. Like Spa the Nurburgring is notorious for is microclimate, hot sunshine is often interrupted by heavy rain and fog at short notice.
Travelling to the Nurburgring is a pilgrimage for some, who take the opportunity before or after the race to drive the full Northern loop. Most fans fly into Frankfurt (Hahn) Airport and rent a car for the 45-minute scenic journey to the circuit.
Keep an eye out for the homes of local racers in the villages you pass through, complete with racing cars in their drives.
