Singapore Marina Bay – 3.149 miles / 5.067km - Race Date: 27 Sep 2009
Address:
Pit Building
1 Republic Boulevard
Singapore 038975
Lap Record: 1:45.599 - K Raikkonen (2008)
Singapore Marina Bay
Following the signing of a five year deal by Bernie Ecclestone, the Singapore Tourism Board and Singaporean entrepreneur Mr Ong Beng Seng, the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix on the stunning Marina Bay circuit held the first night time race in Formula One history in 2008.
The unforgiving 23 turn street circuit was designed by KBR Inc, a modified version of an earlier proposal by Herman Tilke, and runs anti-clockwise with nine right hand bends and 14 left handers. During the 2008 race weekend, a number of small changes had to be made to the circuit for safety reasons; the kerbs, likened by Felipe Massa to small tortoises, were reduced in height, and the pit lane entry temporarily changed. Further modifications will be made to the circuit for the 2009 event, to improve safety and increase overtaking chances.
The changes to Turn 1 will reduce corner speed so that potential overtaking opportunities may be attempted in the braking zone approaching the corner. The apex will be moved slightly, reducing the corner radius and reducing the estimated cornering speed. In the 2008 race, some drivers took a wider line, turning in from the concrete verge next to the wall. Kerbing will also be installed on the entry to Turn 1 so as to prevent cars using the concrete verge to obtain a wider line into the corner.
Turn 13, the tight left handed hairpin after the Anderson Bridge, will be modified to increase corner speed, which will help drivers carry more speed along Esplanade Drive, and increasing the opportunity for overtaking in the braking zone at Turn 14. Following the revisions, the cars are likely to reach speeds of approximately 170mph (275km/h) along Esplanade Drive. Furthermore, Turn 14 will also be modified to improve overtaking opportunities in the braking zone. As with turn 1, the modifications will relocate the corner apex to reduce the corner radius and the estimated cornering speed of the cars, meaning more braking is required for the corner, from higher speeds than in 2008.
During the 2008 Grand Prix, the pit lane entry was criticized due to the large speed differential at the apex of Turn 22 between cars entering the pit lane and those lapping the track. For 2009, a dedicated pit entry lane will be constructed to separate slowing cars from the lapping vehicles. The runoff at Turn 22 will be reduced, in order to provide more room for spectators in the area.
The pit exit lane is also being improved; previously cars rejoined the circuit in the braking zone for Turn 1, immediately after the pit wall. Following guidance from the FIA, the pit lane will exit to the drivers’ left at Turn 2, off the racing line and where cars will be accelerating rather than braking from high speed.
The pit area of the circuit is located off Republic Boulevard and beside the Singapore Flyer - a London Eye type ferris wheel. The track layout is unique in that in between turns 18 and 19, the cars race underneath a section of grandstand of the Floating Platform. Another little fact is that fans were polled to name 3 corners on the track - Turn 1 was named Sheares after Benjamin Henry Sheares, the second president of Singapore; Turn 7 was named Memorial due to its proximity to a Second World War civilian memorial; and Turn 10 was named Singapore Sling. Grandstand seating and hospitality areas have a capacity of 80,000 spectators, with 100,000 expected to attend the race.
To reach Singapore by air, fly into Changi Airport, 20km east of the city, which connects 185 destinations in 58 countries. The quickest way from the airport into the city is via the very modern Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system. Trains leave every 12 minutes and the journey time into City Hall Station is just 27 minutes. Thanks to the efficiency of the MRT, as well as plentiful buses and taxis, you don’t need to hire a car in Singapore.
Singapore is a clean city; in fact it is so spotless that you cannot buy chewing gum, just in case the temptation to litter the streets is too great. There is plenty to do and see while you are visiting the race; a huge line up of musicians and performers has been lines up for you delectation: Travis, Chaka Khan, the Back Street Boys and DJs Carl Cox & John Digweed are just a few of the big name acts that will be performing on stages around the track over race weekend. There are eight locations within the Marina Bay Street Circuit for entertainment, including the F1 Village and Paddock Club Lifestyle Area in Zone 1, the Floating Platform in Zone 3, as well as the Padang, Stamford, Esplanade Park and Esplanade Waterfront stages in Zone 4. The entertainment will start as early as 4pm, with performances scheduled to end around midnight. Acts will appear across multiple zones, except Chaka Khan who will be exclusively appearing in the Paddock Club Lifestyle Area and the Zone 1 stage. Travis is slated to perform at Zone 4 at the Padang, while the Backstreet Boys will be playing a short acoustic set on 26 September (Saturday) in Zone 1 and also a full length set on 27 September (Sunday) at the Padang stage after the race. Chaka Khan is scheduled to perform in Zone 1 at the Paddock Club Lifestyle stage and Zone 1 stage on 27 September (Sunday) only. Other dates have not yet been finalised, so keep an eye on the Singapore GP website for further info.
For shopping/entertainment malls, head towards the Marina Square and Sentosa Island.
Eating out is also a delight, with food to suit every palette. For the most eclectic mix of restaurants, head to the Dempsey Road enclave; it used to be known for its antique teak furniture, but the majority of those shops now serve food and drink. The Wine Company (Block 14-3 Dempsey Road) specialise in wine and pizzas, Samy’s Restaurant (25 Dempsey Road) is famed for its fish-head curry, while the Dempsey Hut (130E Minden Road) offers an outdoor bar in which to enjoy the balmy tropical weather.
Tickets cost between 50 quid for a walkabout ticket on the Sunday to 500 for the best seats in a grandstand. Disabled spectators are accommodated in the Empress Place, Stamford or Pit Grandstands, as a cost of between 50 and 100 pounds.
