Sepang International Circuit was opened on March 9, 1999 by the Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The circuit is located 85 km from Kuala Lumpur city centre, and can be reached via the North-South Expressway, railway links and a network of highways. It is also close by the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
The track is 5.543 km long and has 15 turns and 8 straights - top speeds of more than 300km/h are easily achievable. This is an exciting circuit as it provides many overtaking chances.
Trackside quote:
“I mean all weekend the circuit has been quite similar but there was such little grip I was really, really surprised and I went a little bit deep into turn one and got a big snap of oversteer and that carried throughout the first lap. I was really, really struggling with the rear end as (Fernando) Alonso was in front of me. I have never seen a car so sideways before.”
Jenson Button, Brawn GP, 2009 F1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix

Sepang International, Malaysia
Posted by: Steve Slater
The Sepang International Circuit that hosts the Malaysian Grand Prix was one of the first ‘new generation’ tracks when it opened a decade ago. It continues to offer excellent facilities, perfect English is spoken and admission costs are a fraction of many European venues.
Located just a few minutes taxi ride from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, it is easy to reach, but beware it can get hot trackside. If you can handle the heat and humidity, go and watch the ultra-fast turns 5 and 6, or alternatively enjoy the shade of the stunning ‘hibiscus flower’ grandstands and watch for the late brakers at the final hairpin. Then there’s the choice of the beach, or downtown Kuala Lumpur when the chequered flag falls!
It takes about an hour to reach the centre of Kuala Lumpur city from the track by bus or rail link from the airport and you’ll rapidly discover why Malaysians are proud to be one of the most culturally diverse nations on earth. Around the city you will find everything from graceful mosques and brightly coloured temples to small shops selling ancient Chinese medicines and modern shopping malls selling the very latest electronics and designer labels. The two linked steel and chrome Petronas Towers are among the tallest buildings in the world and the Menara KL or Kuala Lumpur Tower, the fourth highest communications tower in the world, also offers superb panoramic views.
High Tea can still be taken at Carcosa Negara, a gracious 100 year-old villa on a hillside above the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur. Sitting on the verandah in a cool, green oasis from the bustle of the city, you are transported back in time by the ambience of the English colonial architecture and landscaped grounds, twice visited by Her Majesty the Queen.
Away from the city, beachside resorts such as Langkawi, Penang and Pangkor Island make ideal getaways, or the more adventurous might try a jungle excursion into the unspoiled rain forest of Kota Kinabulu or the Kuching Bato National Park in Sarawak, or even white-water rafting on the Lipis River near Jeram Besu.
