Gurston Down is a speed hillclimb venue, and not a circuit. The BARC have staged events here since 1966, the course having been designed by ex-F1 driver and hillclimber Tony Marsh the year previously. The course initially drops 36 feet before rising 176 feet to the finish line - 140 feet above the start line and 1057 yards away. Hillclimb events run classes for every type of competition car new and old from Minis to Formula 1 powered racing cars, and including road cars, modified production cars, sports racing cars and single seaters in various engine capacity classes. Hillclimbing is also one of the few remaining unlimited regulation motorsports, which spectators can get up close to an eclectic mix of awesome and often ingenious machinery, thanks to the friendly and relaxed atmosphere that surrounds the paddock of any hillclimb event.
