| Brooklands |
Brooklands Circuit was constructed at the behest of landowner Hugh Locke-King, and opened on 17 June 1907 as the first purpose-built banked motor race circuit in the world - a year before Indianapolis. The circuit was used for many prestigeous racing events and as the venue for many speed records until the outbreak of the second world war in 1939. It was then requisitioned by the British Government and used as an air base, as several aircraft manufacturers such as Sopwith and Vickers had been based there since 1908, and continued to produce aircraft including Concorde until 1986 when aircraft production ended, and the factory was closed in 1987. Mercedes Benz bought the runway and remaining circuit in 2004 and opened a corporate experience centre called Mercedes Benz World there in 2006. They have constructed a new test track including skid pan which members of the public can try out. Brooklands Museum preserves many historic cars, motorcylces and aircraft as well as the remaining secrtions of the historic banked circuit and test hill, and is often used as the venue for a motor club gathering.
